Description

Yellow Head Jawfish – Opistognathus aurifrons

Overview:
The Yellow Head Jawfish is a charming burrow-dwelling reef fish, easily recognized by its bright yellow head that fades into a pale blue-white body. Known for its unique behavior of hovering above its burrow and quickly darting back in, it adds fascinating activity to the aquarium.

Origin:
Native to the Caribbean Sea and Western Atlantic, often found in sandy or rubble areas near reefs.

Feeding:
Carnivorous – accepts mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and other meaty foods. Will also take high-quality frozen preparations.

Tank Mates:
Best with peaceful community fish. Avoid aggressive or overly active species that may outcompete them for food or disturb their burrows.

Aggression:
Peaceful, but may defend its burrow from other jawfish.

Experience Level:
Intermediate – requires a deep sand bed (3–5 inches) for burrow-building and a secure, covered tank to prevent jumping.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C)

  • pH: 8.1–8.4

  • Salinity: 1.020–1.025

  • Minimum Tank Size: 30+ gallons with sandy substrate

The Yellow Head Jawfish is a delightful, active, and peaceful reef inhabitant, prized for both its color and entertaining burrowing behavior.
