Coral Hogfish (Bodianus mesothorax)

Overview

The Coral Hogfish, also known as the Split-Level Hogfish, is a colorful and hardy reef species featuring a distinctive two-tone body—pinkish-red in the front and yellow toward the tail. Active and curious, it adds vibrant movement to any marine aquarium.

Origin

Found throughout the Indo-Pacific, including Indonesia, Fiji, and the Great Barrier Reef, the Coral Hogfish inhabits coral reefs and rocky slopes, often at moderate depths.

Feeding

A carnivore that enjoys meaty fare such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and quality marine pellets or frozen foods. Feed small portions two to three times daily.

Tank Mates

Generally peaceful with most semi-aggressive or larger species. Avoid very small crustaceans or timid fish, as it may nip or outcompete them for food. Ideal companions include wrasses, tangs, and angelfish.

Aggression

Moderately territorial, especially toward similar-shaped fish or other hogfish. Provide rockwork and caves for hiding and territory establishment.

Experience Level

Best suited for intermediate aquarists; hardy and adaptable when kept in stable, well-maintained marine systems.
