Giant Congo Bichir Polypterus Congicus 10cm

Overview: The Giant Congo Bichir, also known as Polypterus Congicus, is a prehistoric-looking freshwater fish renowned for its distinctive appearance and fascinating behavior. With its elongated body, armored scales, and lung-like swim bladder allowing it to breathe air, the Giant Congo Bichir is a unique addition to any large aquarium. They can grow up to 30 inches in length, making them a centerpiece in a suitably sized tank.

Origin: Native to the Congo River Basin in Central Africa, this species thrives in a variety of freshwater environments, from slow-moving rivers to deep lakes. Their adaptability to different water conditions makes them a resilient species for aquarium life.

Feeding: Giant Congo Bichirs are carnivorous and require a diet rich in protein. They accept a variety of foods including live, frozen, or dried foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and small fish. Feeding should be varied to ensure optimal health and growth.

Tank Mates: Choosing the right tank mates for Giant Congo Bichirs is crucial due to their size and predatory nature. Suitable companions include other large, peaceful fish that can hold their own, such as certain species of catfish, larger cichlids, and other Polypterus species. Avoid small fish that could be considered prey.

Aggression: While not overly aggressive, their predatory instincts mean they might target smaller fish. It’s important to monitor interactions in the aquarium to ensure a harmonious environment.

Experience Level: Due to their size and specific care requirements, Giant Congo Bichirs are best suited for intermediate to advanced aquarium hobbyists. Knowledge of proper tank setup, water quality management, and species-specific needs is essential.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 76°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C)
  • pH: 6.2 to 7.8
  • Hardness: 5 to 20 dGH

Maintaining stable water conditions and providing ample space for swimming are key to keeping these ancient fish healthy. A well-decorated aquarium with hiding spots and a soft, sandy bottom mimics their natural habitat and supports their well-being.

Conclusion: The Giant Congo Bichir is a magnificent and intriguing species for the seasoned aquarium enthusiast. With their prehistoric appearance and interesting behavior, they are sure to be a conversation starter. Proper care, a spacious tank, and compatible tank mates will ensure these ancient fish thrive under your care.
