Red Belly Pipefish Doryichthys Martensii 8cm

Overview: The Red Belly Pipefish, scientifically known as Doryichthys martensii, is a captivating and slender marine species renowned for its unique appearance and graceful swimming motion. With its elongated body and vibrant red belly, it’s a favorite among aquatic enthusiasts looking to add a touch of elegance and intrigue to their marine aquariums.

Origin: Native to the shallow, brackish waters of Southeast Asia, including mangrove forests and estuaries, the Red Belly Pipefish thrives in environments where fresh and saltwater mix. Their natural habitat is characterized by sheltered coastal areas, where they can often be found hiding among vegetation and roots.

Feeding: Red Belly Pipefish have specialized feeding requirements, preferring live foods such as brine shrimp, copepods, and other small crustaceans. Their narrow mouths make them unsuitable for conventional fish foods, emphasizing the importance of providing a diet that mimics their natural intake.

Tank Mates: Ideal tank mates for the Red Belly Pipefish include peaceful and slow-moving species that do not compete aggressively for food. Good companions include small gobies, seahorses, and other non-aggressive fish. It’s crucial to avoid pairing them with large, fast-swimming, or predatory fish that may stress or harm them.

Aggression: By nature, the Red Belly Pipefish is a peaceful and non-aggressive species, making them a harmonious addition to any suitable community tank. Their gentle demeanor, however, requires careful consideration of tank mates to ensure a stress-free environment.

Experience Level: Due to their specific care requirements, including a diet of live food and a need for a well-maintained, stable environment, Red Belly Pipefish are recommended for intermediate to advanced aquarium hobbyists. Proper knowledge and dedication are essential to meet their needs successfully.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 72-78°F (22-25.5°C)
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025 sg
  • pH: 7.8-8.4
  • It’s imperative to maintain clean, stable water conditions and to replicate their natural brackish habitat as closely as possible.

In conclusion, the Red Belly Pipefish offers a unique and rewarding challenge for the dedicated aquarist. With their striking appearance and peaceful nature, they can become a captivating centerpiece in any suitable marine aquarium.
