A powerful and large growing predatory cichlid, the Orinoco Peacock Bass is found throughout the Orinoco and Meta river drainages in Colombia and Venezuela. In nature this species is one of the most widespread species of Cichla and it is found in a variety of habitat types from shallow flooded forest to open water, typically in large schools. Throughout its habitat it is known locally as tucunare or pavon and is an important food and game fish, growing to an adult size of 20”+ and upwards of 8lbs. In the aquarium they make for an impressive display fish, showing vivid yellows, golds, and blues around three (occasionally 4) prominent black spots or bands. Given their huge adult size and active, predatory nature, this fish is suitable only for very large dedicated aquariums or indoor ponds and should not be kept by inexperienced hobbyists. This species, like all Cichla, are extremely fast-growing and can be aggressive towards tankmates, especially other cichlids. Best kept with larger, fast-moving fish.
Diet: The Orinoco Peacock Bass is a Predator and live fish eater, so feeder fish will be required. They will also typically accept frozen foods and pellets once trained.
