Yellow Cubicus Boxfish Ostracion Cubicus

Overview: The Yellow Cubicus Boxfish, known scientifically as Ostracion Cubicus, is a captivating marine species that adds both charm and uniqueness to any saltwater aquarium. With its distinct cubic shape and bright yellow coloration, it’s a visually striking addition that’s sure to draw attention. This species is relatively hardy, but due to its specific care requirements, it’s best suited for aquarists with a bit of experience.

Origin: This intriguing species is found in the warm waters of the Indo-Pacific region, ranging from the eastern coasts of Africa, across the Indian Ocean, to the western shores of the Pacific Ocean. They are commonly observed around reefs and lagoons, where they have plenty of hiding spots and food sources.

Feeding: The Yellow Cubicus Boxfish is an omnivore with a preference for a varied diet. In captivity, they thrive on a mix of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, and marine fishes, along with algae-based foods to ensure a balanced diet. It’s important to feed them small, manageable portions multiple times a day to prevent overfeeding.

Tank Mates: When it comes to tank mates, caution is advised. While they are generally peaceful towards other fish, their tank mates should not be overly aggressive or small enough to be considered prey. Suitable companions include larger fish and those that occupy different areas of the tank. It’s crucial to avoid housing them with other boxfish or pufferfish to prevent territorial disputes.

Aggression: The Yellow Cubicus Boxfish is generally not aggressive but can be territorial with members of its own kind or similar species. They are known to release a toxin when stressed or if they perish in the aquarium, which can be harmful to tank mates. Proper tank management and monitoring are essential to mitigate these risks.

Experience Level: Due to their specific dietary and environmental needs, as well as the potential risk they pose to tank mates under stress, the Yellow Cubicus Boxfish is recommended for intermediate to advanced aquarists. Knowledge and experience in maintaining water quality and handling potential issues are crucial for the wellbeing of this species.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 72°F to 78°F (22°C to 25.5°C)
  • pH: 8.1 to 8.4
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025 SG
  • Tank Size: Minimum of 125 gallons (473 liters) to provide ample swimming space and prevent stress.

Regular monitoring and maintenance of water conditions are vital to ensure the health and happiness of the Yellow Cubicus Boxfish. With proper care, this unique and fascinating species can be a rewarding addition to your marine aquarium.
