Blue Porcelain Anemone Crabs Neopetrolisthes Ohshimai
The Blue Porcelain Anemone Crab, Neopetrolisthes ohshimai, is a unique and fascinating crustacean that makes a great addition to reef aquariums. This crab is not actually a true crab, but rather a close relative of squat lobsters. It has a distinctive white body with blue spots and large, flattened claws that it uses for protection and territorial disputes, though it is generally a peaceful, slow-moving filter feeder.Originating from the Indo-Pacific region, the Blue Porcelain Anemone Crab forms a symbiotic relationship with carpet and adhesive anemones, receiving protection from the anemone’s stinging tentacles while helping to keep the anemone clean. In the aquarium, it does best when provided with a suitable anemone host, such as a Stichodactyla carpet anemone or a bubble-tip anemone. This crab is considered reef-safe and makes a good tank mate for other peaceful invertebrates and small, docile fish. It has a maximum size of around 3 inches and requires a minimum tank size of 10 gallons. The ideal water parameters for the Blue Porcelain Anemone Crab include a temperature of 75-82°F, salinity of 1.020-1.025, and a pH of 8.1-8.4. It is considered an easy-to-care-for species, making it a great choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists looking to add a unique and visually appealing crustacean to their reef setup.
