Description
Giant Feather Duster Fan Worm Sabellastarte sp
The Giant Feather Duster, also known as the Feather Duster Worm, is a relatively hardy fan worm found around Hawaii and in the Indo-Pacific region. It has a tan or orange fan-shaped crown with bold brown band accents. The Feather Duster is a filter feeder that uses its radiole (crown) to filter out small floating organisms, which it then directs toward its mouth. It protects its segmented body by secreting a parchment-like tube to cover itself, and will quickly retract its crown into this tube if disturbed. The Feather Duster is considered peaceful and reef-compatible. It requires a well-established aquarium of at least 30 gallons, as it is dependent on plankton for its diet. Stable water parameters are crucial, with recommended conditions of 76-78°F, dKH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity 1.024-1.026. Supplemental feeding of phytoplankton and liquid organic foods should be provided. The Feather Duster is very intolerant of copper-based medications. Overall, it is considered a moderate care level invertebrate, suitable for aquarists with some experience.
