Description
Blastomussa Big Pipe Hard Coral Blastomussa Merletti
The Blastomussa merletti, also known as the “pineapple coral”, is a large polyp stony (LPS) coral that originates from the Indo-Pacific region. This coral has smaller polyps compared to the Blastomussa wellsi, typically reaching up to 1 inch in diameter, and often grows on stalks. The Blastomussa merletti receives nutrients through a symbiotic relationship with photosynthetic algae (zooxanthellae) as well as by filter-feeding on small particles in the water column. They require moderate lighting (75-125 PAR) and low to moderate water flow to thrive. This coral is considered moderately difficult to keep and is recommended for experienced reef aquarists. It should be placed in the aquarium where there is low to moderate water flow to avoid damage to the polyps. Suitable tank mates include other peaceful LPS and soft corals. The optimal water parameters for the Blastomussa merletti include:
- Temperature: 77-84°F (25-29°C)
- pH: 8.0-8.4
- Alkalinity: 8-9 dKH
- Calcium: 400-450 ppm
- Nitrate: 5-10 ppm
- Phosphate: 0.05-0.1 ppm
