Overview

The Albino Spanish Ribbed Newt is a striking colour variant of Pleurodeles waltl, displaying pale golden skin and pinkish eyes. Known for being hardy, curious, and long-lived, this fully aquatic newt is ideal for keepers seeking an unusual, personable amphibian. Its name comes from the small rib tips that can protrude when threatened—harmless to keepers but fascinating biologically.

Origin

Native to the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal) and parts of Morocco, inhabiting cool ponds, lakes, marshes, and slow-moving freshwater bodies.

Feeding

Carnivorous and easy to feed. Accepts:

  • Bloodworms

  • Earthworms

  • Insect larvae

  • Sinking amphibian or carnivore pellets

  • Small strips of fish or prawn

A varied, protein-rich diet is recommended for best health and colour.

Tank Mates

Best kept in a species-only setup. If tank mates are desired, use only peaceful, cool-water fish that won’t nip at their gills or limbs, such as:

  • White Cloud Mountain Minnows

  • Variants of cold-tolerant, small fish

Avoid:

  • Any warm-water species

  • Fin-nippers

  • Large fish that may see newts as food

  • Crayfish or aggressive invertebrates

Aggression

Generally peaceful. May eat very small fish or shrimp if given the chance. Prefer calm, low-stress environments.

Experience Level

Beginner to intermediate. Extremely hardy compared to other amphibians, but requires cool, clean, well-oxygenated water and a secure lid.

  • Temperature: 60–72°F (15–22°C) Cool water species—avoid warm tanks

  • pH: 6.8–7.8

  • Hardness: 4–15 dGH

  • Tank Setup:

    • Fully aquatic; provide gentle flow

    • Soft substrate or bare bottom

    • Tight lid—excellent escape artists

Courier Service Level Agreement

Our courier collects livestock from us on the evening before your selected delivery date. Delivery is made the following day before 1:00pm, with livestock maintained in the same condition and temperature as at collection.

Tracking details will be sent directly by our courier (DX) on the evening of collection. You will also receive a text message around 9:00am on the day of delivery with your estimated delivery time slot.
