Description

Red Spotted Nerite Snail (Neritina sp.)

Overview:
The Red Spotted Nerite Snail is a beautiful freshwater snail admired for its dark shell decorated with vibrant red or reddish-orange spots. This striking pattern, combined with its excellent algae-eating ability, makes it both a decorative and practical addition to planted and community aquariums.

Origin:
Native to Southeast Asia and Indo-Pacific coastal regions, Neritina species are commonly found in rivers, streams, and estuarine habitats with clean, flowing water.

Feeding:
Primarily herbivorous. Feeds on algae, biofilm, and micro-organisms growing on aquarium glass, rocks, plants, and décor. If natural algae is limited, supplement with algae wafers or blanched vegetables such as zucchini or spinach.

Tank / Setup Requirements:

  • Minimum tank size: 20 litres (5 gallons)

  • Provide rocks, driftwood, and plants for grazing surfaces

  • Stable water parameters recommended

  • Secure lid advised, as nerite snails may occasionally climb above the waterline

Tank Mates:
Suitable for peaceful community aquariums with most small fish, shrimp, and other invertebrates. Avoid snail-eating fish such as puffers or large loaches.

Behaviour:
Peaceful and active algae grazer. Constantly moves across surfaces feeding on algae and biofilm. Like other nerite snails, they may lay eggs in freshwater, but the eggs will not hatch without brackish water conditions.

Experience Level:
Beginner friendly. Hardy and easy to maintain, making them ideal for planted aquariums and aquascapes.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F)

  • pH: 6.5–8.0

  • Water Type: Freshwater

  • Hardness: Moderate to hard water preferred for shell health.
