Barbel Barbus Barbus 10cm

Overview: The Barbel, Barbus barbus, is a distinctive freshwater fish known for its elongated body, four barbels (whisker-like structures) near its mouth, and overall bronze to olive-green coloration. It can grow up to 30 inches, making it a sizable addition to larger aquariums.

Origin: Native to Europe and Asia, the Barbel thrives in fast-flowing, clear rivers and streams. It is particularly common in the Danube and Rhine river systems.

Feeding: Omnivorous by nature, the Barbel adapts well to a variety of diets. In captivity, they should be fed a mix of high-quality sinking pellets, live or frozen foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp, and vegetable matter to ensure balanced nutrition.

Tank Mates: Barbels do best with similar-sized, non-aggressive fish. Ideal tank mates include larger cyprinids, loaches, and some types of catfish. Avoid housing them with small or overly timid species, as Barbels can be boisterous.

Aggression: Generally peaceful towards similarly sized fish, Barbels may display territorial behavior, especially during breeding. Providing ample space and hiding spots can mitigate aggression.

Experience Level: Suited for intermediate to experienced aquarists. Their size and need for a current in the tank make them less ideal for beginners.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 10-20°C (50-68°F)
  • pH: 6.0-8.0
  • Water hardness: Moderate to hard
  • Flow: Moderate to strong current required

Regular water changes and efficient filtration are essential to replicate their natural riverine habitat. A large, well-oxygenated aquarium with plenty of hiding places and a gravel substrate will help create an ideal environment for the Barbel.
