Description

Batik Nerite Snail (Neritina variegata)

Overview:
The Batik Nerite Snail is a visually stunning freshwater snail named for its shell pattern, which resembles traditional batik fabric with intricate dark and light markings. Highly valued for its decorative appearance and excellent algae-eating abilities, it is a practical and attractive addition to planted and community aquariums.

Origin:
Native to Southeast Asia, Neritina variegata is commonly found in rivers, streams, and coastal estuarine environments with clean, flowing water.

Feeding:
Primarily herbivorous. Feeds on algae, biofilm, and microorganisms growing on aquarium surfaces such as glass, rocks, plants, and décor. If natural algae is scarce, supplement with algae wafers or blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach.

Tank / Setup Requirements:

  • Minimum tank size: 20 litres (5 gallons)

  • Provide rocks, driftwood, and plants for grazing surfaces

  • Stable water parameters recommended

  • Secure lid advised, as nerite snails may occasionally climb above the waterline

Tank Mates:
Ideal for peaceful community aquariums with small fish, shrimp, and other invertebrates. Avoid snail-eating fish such as puffers or large loaches.

Behaviour:
Peaceful and active algae grazer. Constantly moves across surfaces feeding on algae and biofilm. Like other nerite snails, they may lay eggs in freshwater, but the eggs will not hatch without brackish water conditions.

Experience Level:
Beginner friendly. Hardy and easy to care for, making them ideal for planted aquariums and aquascapes.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F)

  • pH: 6.5–8.0

  • Water Type: Freshwater

  • Hardness: Moderate to hard water preferred for shell health.
