Overview: The Blue-Eyed Cardinalfish is a stunning addition to any marine aquarium, known for its vibrant colors and peaceful demeanor. This small, yet captivating species exhibits a striking contrast of silvery-blue hues complemented by its distinctive blue eyes, making it a focal point in any tank setting.

Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, the Blue-Eyed Cardinalfish thrives in the coral reefs and lagoon waters ranging from the eastern coast of Africa to the islands of the central Pacific. Their natural habitat is characterized by warm, shallow waters where they can often be found sheltering amongst coral branches and rubble.

Feeding: This species is omnivorous with a diet in the wild consisting mainly of small crustaceans and zooplankton. In captivity, they readily accept a variety of foods including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and quality marine flake food. To ensure optimal health and coloration, a varied diet is recommended.

Tank Mates: As a peaceful and somewhat shy species, the Blue-Eyed Cardinalfish does well with other non-aggressive fish. Ideal tank mates include other cardinalfish, small gobies, wrasses, and peaceful invertebrates. It is best to avoid housing them with large, predatory fish.

Aggression: Exhibiting a peaceful nature, the Blue-Eyed Cardinalfish is an ideal candidate for community tanks. They are known to be schooling fish in the wild, so keeping them in small groups can help mimic their natural social structure and reduce stress.

Experience Level: Suitable for both novice and experienced aquarists, this species is relatively hardy and easy to care for, making it an excellent choice for those new to marine aquarium keeping.

Water Parameters: To thrive, the Blue-Eyed Cardinalfish requires stable water conditions within the following parameters:

  • Temperature: 72°F – 78°F (22°C – 26°C)
  • pH: 8.1 – 8.4
  • Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 sg
  • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
  • Nitrate: <20 ppm

Regular water changes and monitoring of water quality are essential to maintain these parameters and ensure the health of your Blue-Eyed Cardinalfish.

Conclusion: The Blue-Eyed Cardinalfish is a mesmerizing and peaceful addition to any marine aquarium. Its easy care, peaceful nature, and striking appearance make it a popular choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists alike.
