Description
Flowerhorn Cichlid – Short Body Super Red Dragon (SB SRD)
Overview:
The Short Body Super Red Dragon (SB SRD) is a compact, high-impact variant of the Super Red Dragon line. Known for its short, stocky body, this Flowerhorn emphasizes intense red coloration, prominent pearling, and a dramatic nuchal hump (kok). Its reduced body length makes the pearling appear denser and more striking, giving it a “dragon-like” visual intensity in a smaller frame.
Origin:
Developed through selective breeding in Thailand and Malaysia, SB SRD is derived from the Super Red Dragon line, focusing on shorter body proportions while retaining maximal pearling and kok development.
Feeding:
-
Staple Diet: High-quality Flowerhorn pellets for growth and color.
-
Supplements: Krill, shrimp, and bloodworms enhance red saturation and body condition.
-
Color Enhancers: Spirulina-based or carotenoid-rich foods maintain pearling brightness.
Tank Mates:
-
Best kept solo due to high aggression.
-
Tank mates possible only in large, partitioned aquariums with equally robust species.
Aggression Level:
Very High. SB SRDs are territorial and display strong dominance over any other fish.
Experience Level:
Advanced. Requires careful feeding, water monitoring, and consistent tank conditions to maintain peak coloration and kok growth.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 78–84°F (25–29°C)
-
pH: 7.2–8.0
-
Hardness: 8–20 dGH
-
Minimum Tank Size: 75 gallons (larger preferred for adult SB SRDs)
Unique Features:
-
Body Shape: Short, muscular frame enhances visual impact of pearling.
-
Coloration: Deep, fiery red with metallic pearling along the flanks.
-
Kok (Head Growth): Prominent, round, and pronounced.
-
Pearling: Dense and uniform, giving a “starry dragon” effect.
-
Rarity: Highly sought after by collectors for its compact, show-quality build.
✨ The Short Body Super Red Dragon is ideal for hobbyists who want a dramatic, compact Flowerhorn with intense red coloration and glittering pearling, perfect as a centerpiece in any collection.
