Description

Geophagus Aporema 4cm

Overview: The Geophagus Aporema, a captivating species in the cichlid family, enchants aquarists with its elegant appearance and intriguing behaviors. Known for their peaceful demeanor and distinctive geophagine habit of sifting through substrate, these fish add a dynamic layer to any tank they inhabit. Their body is adorned with iridescent hues that change under different lighting conditions, making them a striking addition to any aquarium.

Origin: Native to the soft, acidic waters of South America, Geophagus Aporema are found in river basins and freshwater habitats where they enjoy ample space to roam and forage. Their adaptation to these environments makes them a fascinating subject for biotope aquariums that replicate their natural habitat.

Feeding: Geophagus Aporema are omnivorous with a preference for a diet that includes a variety of foods. Offer them a mix of high-quality cichlid pellets, frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms, and vegetable-based foods to ensure they receive a balanced diet. Their unique feeding behavior, sifting through the substrate to extract food, requires a consideration of appropriate substrate material to facilitate this natural foraging habit.

Tank Mates: These peaceful cichlids thrive in community tanks with other non-aggressive species. Suitable tank mates include larger tetras, peaceful South American cichlids, catfish, and loaches. Avoid housing them with small, aggressive, or fin-nipping species to maintain harmony within the tank.

Aggression: Geophagus Aporema exhibit minimal aggression, making them an ideal choice for community aquariums. However, males may show territorial behavior during breeding. Providing ample space and hiding spots can mitigate aggressive tendencies and promote a peaceful environment.

Experience Level: Ideal for intermediate to advanced aquarists, Geophagus Aporema require specific water conditions and diet to thrive. Knowledge of their natural habitat and behaviors will enhance their well-being and longevity in captivity.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 76°F to 84°F (24°C to 29°C)
  • pH: 6.0 to 7.5
  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
  • Regular water changes and maintenance are essential to mimic their natural, clean water habitat.

Embrace the beauty and tranquility of the Geophagus Aporema in your aquarium and witness the serene elegance they bring to your aquatic world.
