Giant Trevally Caranx Ignobilis 8cm

Overview: The Giant Trevally, also known as the GT, is a species of large brackish fish that belongs to the jack family, Carangidae. This powerful and highly sought-after game fish is known for its impressive size, strength, and fighting ability. With a sleek, silver body and a robust build, the Giant Trevally can grow to impressive sizes, making it a prized addition to large brackish aquariums.

Origin: Native to the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region, the Giant Trevally is found from the coast of Africa to Hawaii, including the Red Sea, Japan, Australia, and the central Pacific islands. They inhabit a range of environments from shallow bays and lagoons to deep offshore reefs.

Feeding: As apex predators, Giant Trevallies have a varied diet that includes fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods. In captivity, they require a diet of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, and small fish. It’s essential to provide a diverse and nutritionally balanced diet to maintain their health and vitality.

Tank Mates: Due to their size and aggressive nature, choosing tank mates for the Giant Trevally requires careful consideration. Suitable companions include other large, robust species that can hold their own, such as larger groupers, snappers, and other jacks. It is crucial to avoid small and docile fish, as they may become prey.

Aggression: Giant Trevallies are highly territorial and can exhibit aggression towards other fish, especially in confined spaces. Providing ample room for swimming and territories, along with carefully selected tank mates, can help mitigate aggressive behaviors.

Experience Level: Due to their large size, specific dietary needs, and aggressive behavior, the Giant Trevally is best suited for experienced aquarists. Maintaining a suitable environment for this species requires a large aquarium (several hundred gallons) and a commitment to regular care and maintenance.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 22-28°C (72-82°F)
  • pH: 7.5-8.4
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025

Maintaining stable water parameters and excellent water quality is crucial for the health of the Giant Trevally. Regular water changes, efficient filtration, and monitoring of water conditions are essential practices for keeping this majestic fish thriving in captivity.
