Gold Rim Tang Acanthurus Nigricans

The Gold Rim Tang, also known as the Whitecheek Tang or Powder Grey Tang, is a species of surgeonfish native to the East Indian Ocean, Australia, Indonesia, the East Pacific, and the Central/West Pacific. It has an oval-shaped body that is deep brown to black in color, with jet black dorsal and anal fins, a reduced white cheek patch under the eye, and a distinctive yellow line along the body bordering the dorsal and anal fins. The Gold Rim Tang is primarily herbivorous, requiring a diet consisting largely of algae-based foods to maintain optimal health, coloration, and immune function. It will also consume various protein-based frozen foods. This tang is considered one of the more aggressive species within the Acanthurus genus and may act aggressively towards other similarly-shaped tangs. It is best to add the Gold Rim Tang last when keeping multiple tang species, or to introduce all tang species at the same time. An established aquarium of at least 125 gallons with ample rockwork and swimming space is recommended for the Gold Rim Tang. It is sensitive to water quality and prone to diseases like marine ich when stressed. Maintaining ideal water parameters of 72-78°F, KH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity 1.020-1.025 is crucial. Overall, the Gold Rim Tang is a beautiful but moderately challenging fish that requires an experienced aquarist to care for properly. Its algae-grazing behavior makes it a good addition to a reef aquarium, but its aggression towards similar species must be considered when selecting tank mates.
