Description

Great Pond Snail (Lymnaea stagnalis)

Overview:
The Great Pond Snail is a large and active freshwater snail, recognised for its elongated, pointed shell and lively behaviour. It is an efficient scavenger that helps clean up algae and organic waste, making it a useful addition to natural and planted aquariums.

Origin:
Native to Europe and parts of Asia, Lymnaea stagnalis is commonly found in ponds, lakes, and slow-moving freshwater environments.

Feeding:
Omnivorous. Feeds on algae, biofilm, decaying plant matter, and leftover fish food. Will also graze on soft plants if underfed, so supplemental feeding with vegetables such as lettuce, zucchini, or spinach is recommended.

Tank Mates:
Suitable for peaceful community tanks but best kept with non-aggressive species. Avoid snail-eating fish such as puffers and loaches.

Aggression:
Peaceful. Non-aggressive but may disturb delicate plants while feeding.

Experience Level:
Beginner friendly. Hardy and easy to keep in a variety of freshwater setups.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 15–25°C (59–77°F)
  • pH: 6.5–8.0
  • Water Type: Freshwater
  • Hardness: Moderate to hard water preferred for shell health
