Description

King Koopa Nerite Snail (Neritona juttingae)

Overview:
The King Koopa Nerite Snail is a striking and uncommon freshwater snail known for its rounded shell decorated with bold patterns and small horn-like protrusions. Its unique appearance and powerful algae-grazing ability make it both an attractive and practical addition to planted and community aquariums.

Origin:
Native to Southeast Asia, Neritona juttingae is typically found in rivers, streams, and coastal estuarine environments with clean, flowing water.

Feeding:
Primarily herbivorous. Feeds on algae, biofilm, and micro-organisms growing on aquarium surfaces such as glass, rocks, plants, and décor. If natural algae is limited, supplement with algae wafers or blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach.

Tank / Setup Requirements:

  • Minimum tank size: 20 litres (5 gallons)

  • Provide rocks, driftwood, and plants for grazing surfaces

  • Stable water parameters recommended

  • A secure lid is recommended, as nerite snails may occasionally climb above the waterline

Tank Mates:
Suitable for peaceful community aquariums with most small fish, shrimp, and other invertebrates. Avoid snail-eating fish such as puffers or large loaches.

Behaviour:
Peaceful and active algae grazer. Constantly moves across surfaces feeding on algae and biofilm. Like other nerite snails, they may lay eggs in freshwater, but the eggs will not hatch without brackish water conditions.

Experience Level:
Beginner friendly. Hardy and easy to care for, making them an excellent addition to planted aquariums and aquascapes.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F)

  • pH: 6.5–8.0

  • Water Type: Freshwater

  • Hardness: Moderate to hard water recommended for shell health.
