Description
L190 Royal Pleco Panaque Nigrolineatus
The L190 Royal Pleco, scientifically known as Panaque Nigrolineatus, is a magnificent and highly sought-after species in the aquarium hobby. Distinguished by its striking dark body adorned with beautiful light stripes and spots, this pleco makes a dramatic statement in any freshwater tank. Growing up to 15-17 inches in captivity, the Royal Pleco requires a spacious aquarium to thrive.
Origin
Native to the fast-flowing rivers and tributaries of South America, particularly in Venezuela and Colombia, the Royal Pleco is adept at navigating strong currents. Its natural habitat is rich in oxygen and laden with driftwood, which plays a significant role in its diet and well-being.
Feeding
The L190 Royal Pleco is primarily a wood-eating species (xylivorous), relying heavily on submerged driftwood for both nutrition and digestive health. It also appreciates a varied diet including high-quality sinking pellets, fresh vegetables (such as zucchini, cucumber, and peas), and occasional protein sources like brine shrimp or bloodworms. Ensuring access to driftwood is crucial for their dietary needs.
Tank Mates
This pleco is generally peaceful and can be housed with a wide variety of fish. Suitable tank mates include larger tetras, rasboras, cichlids (not too aggressive), and other plecos that do not compete for territory. Smaller, peaceful fish are also good companions as the Royal Pleco is not known to bother them.
Aggression
The L190 Royal Pleco is relatively peaceful but can show territorial behavior towards other bottom-dwelling fish, especially of the same or similar species. Providing ample hiding spots and enough space can minimize aggression.
Experience Level
Due to their size and specific care requirements, Royal Plecos are best suited for intermediate to advanced aquarists. Ensuring a properly sized tank, appropriate diet, and stable water conditions are essential for their health.
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 76°F to 80°F (24°C to 27°C)
- pH: 6.5 to 7.5
- Hardness: 6 to 10 dGH
- Water flow: Moderate to high to mimic their natural habitat
A well-filtered aquarium with regular water changes is vital to maintain the high water quality necessary for the L190 Royal Pleco’s health. Decorations should include plenty of driftwood and hiding places to mimic their natural environment and support their dietary needs.
