Description

L25 Seven Pointer Red Scarlet Cactus Pleco Pseudacanthicus Pirarara sp

Overview: The L25 Scarlet Cactus Pleco, also known as the Scarlet Pleco, is a striking and highly sought-after freshwater fish known for its vibrant red and orange hues, combined with a robust, armored appearance. This species can grow to a significant size, often reaching up to 15 inches in captivity, making it a captivating centerpiece for any large aquarium.

Origin: Native to the fast-flowing rivers and tributaries of the Amazon Basin in South America, the L25 Scarlet Cactus Pleco is accustomed to environments with strong currents and plenty of hiding spots among rocks and driftwood.

Feeding: Primarily carnivorous, the diet of the L25 Scarlet Cactus Pleco should include a variety of high-protein foods. Offer them a mix of sinking carnivore pellets, frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and occasionally, pieces of fresh fish or shellfish to ensure proper nutrition.

Tank Mates: Choosing the right tank mates for the L25 Scarlet Cactus Pleco is crucial due to its size and territorial nature. Suitable companions include large, peaceful fish and other robust species that can hold their own. Avoid small, timid, or overly aggressive fish that might provoke or be bullied by the pleco.

Aggression: The L25 Scarlet Cactus Pleco can exhibit territorial behavior, especially towards other bottom-dwellers or plecos. Providing ample space, numerous hiding spots, and a properly structured environment can help minimize aggression.

Experience Level: Due to its size, dietary needs, and specific water parameter requirements, the L25 Scarlet Cactus Pleco is best suited for intermediate to advanced aquarists familiar with the care of large, demanding species.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 77-86°F (25-30°C)
  • pH: 6.5-7.5
  • Hardness: 6-10 dGH
  • It is imperative to maintain high water quality with regular water changes and efficient filtration to mimic the clean, oxygen-rich waters of its natural habitat.

In summary, the L25 Scarlet Cactus Pleco is a magnificent and challenging species that requires a dedicated aquarist to thrive. With proper care, this pleco can be a stunning and rewarding addition to any large freshwater aquarium.
