Mokele Mbembe Bichir Polypterus Mokelembembe 10cm

Overview: The Mokele Mbembe Bichir, scientifically named Polypterus Mokelembembe, is a captivating and prehistoric-looking freshwater fish that adds an element of intrigue to any aquarium. Known for its elongated body, armored scales, and dinosaur-like appearance, it’s a species that dates back millions of years, making it a living fossil among fish enthusiasts. This fish is not only a testament to the resilience of ancient species but also a centerpiece in home aquariums due to its unique appearance and behavior.

Origin: This mythical species is named after the legendary Mokele-Mbembe, a creature believed to inhabit the Congo River Basin. The Polypterus Mokelembembe hails from the freshwaters of Central Africa, thriving in river systems with dense vegetation and muddy substrates. Its natural habitat allows it to utilize its pectoral fins for navigating through complex environments, making it a skilled swimmer in both swift and stagnant waters.

Feeding: The Mokele Mbembe Bichir is a carnivorous species, requiring a diet rich in protein to maintain its health and vitality. In captivity, they can be fed a variety of foods, including live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and small fish. It’s crucial to ensure a balanced diet to support their growth and immune system. Feeding should be done in moderation to prevent obesity and water quality issues.

Tank Mates: When selecting tank mates for the Mokele Mbembe Bichir, consider species that are peaceful yet can hold their own. Ideal tank mates include larger tetras, barbs, and other non-aggressive medium-sized fish. Avoid small fish that could be mistaken for prey. It’s essential to provide ample space for all inhabitants to reduce stress and territorial behavior.

Aggression: The Mokele Mbembe Bichir exhibits a relatively peaceful demeanor towards fish of similar size. However, its predatory nature means it may show aggression towards much smaller species. Providing hiding spots and ample space can minimize stress-induced aggression and ensure a harmonious aquarium environment.

Experience Level: This species is best suited for intermediate to advanced aquarists. Its unique care requirements, dietary needs, and environmental preferences demand a certain level of expertise and commitment to ensure a healthy and thriving aquatic life.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 76°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C)
  • pH: 6.5 to 7.5
  • Hardness: 5 to 19 dGH
  • Water quality should be maintained at high standards, with regular water changes and efficient filtration to handle the bioload and keep the environment clean and oxygen-rich.

In conclusion, the Mokele Mbembe Bichir (Polypterus Mokelembembe) is a fascinating addition to any aquarium, bringing a touch of prehistoric intrigue to the aquatic world. With proper care, diet, and environment, this ancient species can thrive and offer an unparalleled visual and behavioral experience for the dedicated aquarist.
