Description
Ocellated Catfish Synodontis Ocellifer 5cm
Overview: The Ocellated Catfish, Synodontis Ocellifer, captivates aquarists with its unique appearance and peaceful demeanor. Known for its striking pattern of spots and ocelli, this species adds a touch of exotic beauty to any freshwater aquarium. Growing up to 12 inches in length, they are a notable presence in the tank, showcasing their distinct, large, dark spots against a light brown to golden background.
Origin: Native to the river basins of West Africa, including the Niger, Volta, and Chad, Synodontis Ocellifer thrives in a variety of water conditions. Their natural habitat consists of sandy and rocky riverbeds where they can hide and forage.
Feeding: Omnivorous by nature, the Ocellated Catfish has a varied diet. In captivity, they readily accept a mix of high-quality sinking pellets, frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. It’s important to ensure a balanced diet to keep them healthy and vibrant.
Tank Mates: This species is generally peaceful and can be housed with a wide range of tank mates. Ideal companions include larger tetras, barbs, and other African catfish. However, due to their size, care should be taken to avoid very small fish that could be mistaken for prey.
Aggression: Synodontis Ocellifer is known for its peaceful nature but can become territorial with its own kind or similar species. It’s recommended to keep them singly or in groups large enough to disperse aggression, ensuring ample hiding spots within the aquarium.
Experience Level: Intermediate. While not overly demanding, their size and specific water requirements make them better suited for hobbyists with some experience in fish keeping.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 72-79°F (22-26°C)
- pH: 6.5-7.5
- Hardness: 4-15 dGH
Maintaining stable water conditions and regular water changes are crucial for their well-being. A well-decorated aquarium with plenty of hiding spaces such as caves, driftwood, and plants will mimic their natural environment, promoting a stress-free life for these captivating catfish.
