Passer King Angelfish Holacanthus Passer

Overview: The Passer King Angelfish, scientifically known as Holacanthus passer, is a vibrant marine spectacle that captivates with its royal blue body, accented by a striking orange vertical stripe and a luminescent white margin on its dorsal and anal fins. Mature adults may also showcase a pronounced hump on the forehead, adding to their majestic appearance. This species reaches up to 14 inches in length, making it a commanding presence in any aquarium.

Origin: Native to the Eastern Pacific, from the Gulf of California down to Peru, including the Galapagos Islands, the Passer King Angelfish thrives in rocky reefs and lagoons. Its natural habitat is characterized by clear, warm waters where it swims at depths ranging from shallow waters to 100 feet.

Feeding: In the aquarium, the Passer King Angelfish requires a varied diet to maintain its health and vibrant colors. Offer a mix of marine algae, spirulina, mysis shrimp, and other high-quality angelfish preparations. This species appreciates the inclusion of fresh vegetables such as spinach and zucchini in its diet.

Tank Mates: Choosing the right tank mates is crucial for a harmonious aquarium. The Passer King Angelfish can coexist with a variety of fish but should be kept with those of similar size and temperament. Avoid housing with overly aggressive species or small, timid fish that it might bully. Suitable companions include larger tangs, wrasses, and other angelfish, provided the tank is spacious enough to mitigate territorial disputes.

Aggression: While generally peaceful with other large fish, the Passer King Angelfish can exhibit territorial aggression, especially towards members of its own species or similar-looking fish. A single specimen per tank is recommended unless the aquarium is exceptionally large with ample hiding spaces and territories.

Experience Level: Due to its size, diet, and specific care requirements, the Passer King Angelfish is best suited for intermediate to advanced aquarists. Successful care requires a well-established tank of at least 180 gallons with stable water conditions and plenty of live rock for grazing.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 72-78°F (22-25.5°C)
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025 sg
  • pH: 8.1-8.4
  • Alkalinity: 8-12 dKH

Maintaining optimal water quality is paramount for the health of the Passer King Angelfish. Regular water changes, efficient filtration, and monitoring of water parameters are essential practices for keeping this regal fish thriving in a home aquarium.
