Mottled Fat Headed Bichir Polypterus Weeksii 10cm

Overview: The Mottled Fat Headed Bichir, scientifically known as Polypterus weeksii, is a prehistoric-looking freshwater fish that captivates aquarists with its unique appearance and intriguing behavior. These elongated fish are adorned with a mottled pattern of greys, browns, and occasional yellows, making them a visually striking addition to any aquarium. With a lifespan that can exceed 15 years, these resilient fish make for long-term companions for dedicated hobbyists.

Origin: Native to the Congo River Basin in Africa, Polypterus weeksii thrives in a variety of freshwater environments. Their natural habitat ranges from slow-moving rivers and streams to flooded areas where water conditions can vary significantly, making them adaptable to different aquarium setups.

Feeding: Mottled Fat Headed Bichirs are carnivorous, requiring a diet rich in protein. They will readily accept a variety of foods, including live, frozen, or freeze-dried bloodworms, brine shrimp, and small fish. To ensure a balanced diet, it’s advisable to rotate their food sources and include specially formulated pellets designed for carnivorous species.

Tank Mates: Choosing the right tank mates for Polypterus weeksii is crucial due to their predatory nature. Suitable companions include larger, peaceful fish that can coexist without competing for food or space. Avoid small fish that could be mistaken for prey. Species such as larger cichlids, catfish, and similarly sized bichirs can make for harmonious tank mates.

Aggression: While not overly aggressive, the Mottled Fat Headed Bichir can exhibit territorial behaviors, especially during feeding times. Providing ample space and hiding spots can minimize aggression. It’s important to monitor their interactions with tank mates to ensure a peaceful aquarium environment.

Experience Level: Polypterus weeksii is best suited for intermediate to advanced aquarists. Their care requires a commitment to maintaining high water quality and providing a diet that meets their carnivorous needs. Knowledge of their natural behavior and environmental requirements is essential for their wellbeing.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 75-82°F (24-28°C)
  • pH: 6.5-7.5
  • Hardness: 5-20 dGH

Maintaining stable water conditions is vital for the health of Polypterus weeksii. Regular water changes, proper filtration, and monitoring of water parameters will help replicate their natural habitat and promote a thriving environment for these fascinating creatures.
