Description

Prambanan Nerite Snail (Neritina prambanan sp.)

Overview:
The Prambanan Nerite Snail is a beautiful freshwater snail admired for its attractive patterned shell featuring natural stripes and earthy tones. Known for its excellent algae-eating ability and peaceful behaviour, this species is both a decorative and highly beneficial addition to planted and community aquariums.

Origin:
Native to Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia, Neritina prambanan inhabits clean rivers, streams, and coastal waterways with moderate water flow.

Feeding:
Primarily herbivorous. Feeds on algae, biofilm, and micro-organisms growing on aquarium glass, rocks, plants, and décor. If natural algae is limited, supplement with algae wafers or blanched vegetables such as zucchini or spinach.

Tank / Setup Requirements:

  • Minimum tank size: 20 litres (5 gallons)

  • Provide rocks, driftwood, and plants for grazing surfaces

  • Stable water parameters recommended

  • Secure lid recommended, as nerite snails may occasionally climb above the waterline

Tank Mates:
Ideal for peaceful community aquariums with small fish, shrimp, and other invertebrates. Avoid snail-eating fish such as puffers or large loaches.

Behaviour:
Peaceful and active algae grazer. Spends most of its time moving across surfaces feeding on algae and biofilm. Like other nerite snails, they may lay eggs in freshwater, but the eggs will not hatch without brackish water conditions.

Experience Level:
Beginner friendly. Hardy and easy to care for, making them excellent additions to planted aquariums and aquascapes.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F)

  • pH: 6.5–8.0

  • Water Type: Freshwater

  • Hardness: Moderate to hard water recommended for shell health.
