Description

Thorny Nerite Snail (Neritina “Durian”) – 2 cm

Overview:
The Thorny Nerite Snail, often called the “Durian Snail,” is a distinctive freshwater snail recognised for its round shell covered in short, thorn-like spikes resembling the famous durian fruit. Its unique appearance and excellent algae-eating abilities make it both a decorative and highly beneficial addition to aquariums.

Origin:
Native to Southeast Asia, Neritina species are commonly found in coastal rivers, streams, and estuarine environments.

Feeding:
Primarily herbivorous. Feeds on algae, biofilm, and micro-organisms growing on aquarium glass, rocks, plants, and décor. If natural algae is limited, supplement with algae wafers or blanched vegetables such as zucchini or spinach.

Tank / Setup Requirements:

  • Minimum tank size: 20 litres (5 gallons)

  • Provide rocks, driftwood, and plants for grazing surfaces

  • Stable water parameters recommended

  • A secure lid is recommended, as nerite snails may occasionally climb above the waterline

Tank Mates:
Suitable for peaceful community aquariums with most small fish, shrimp, and other invertebrates. Avoid snail-eating fish such as puffers or large loaches.

Behaviour:
Peaceful and active algae grazer. Constantly moves across surfaces feeding on algae and biofilm. Like other nerite snails, they may lay eggs in freshwater, but these eggs will not hatch without brackish water conditions.

Experience Level:
Beginner friendly. Hardy and easy to care for, making them ideal for planted aquariums and aquascapes.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F)

  • pH: 6.5–8.0

  • Water Type: Freshwater

  • Hardness: Moderate to hard water recommended for shell health.

Size:
Approximately 2 cm at sale.
