Overview: The Tong Yang Arowana, also known as the Asian Arowana, is a captivating and prestigious freshwater fish that is highly sought after by aquarium enthusiasts worldwide. This species is renowned for its metallic sheen, vibrant colors, and the majestic way it glides through the water. With its ancient lineage and striking appearance, the Tong Yang Arowana is considered a symbol of luck, wealth, and prosperity in many cultures.

Origin: Native to Southeast Asia, the Tong Yang Arowana inhabits slow-moving rivers and lakes. This species has a broad distribution, ranging from countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, to parts of Vietnam. Due to habitat destruction and overfishing for the aquarium trade, it has been listed as endangered and is subject to CITES regulations to prevent over-exploitation.

Feeding: Tong Yang Arowanas are carnivorous and require a diet rich in protein. They thrive on a variety of foods, including live or frozen fish, shrimp, and mealworms. It is crucial to provide a balanced diet to ensure their vibrant coloration and optimal health. Feeding should be done carefully to prevent overfeeding and maintain water quality.

Tank Mates: Choosing the right tank mates for Tong Yang Arowana is essential due to its size and temperament. Suitable companions include large, peaceful species that can hold their own without competing with the Arowana for food. Examples include large catfish, plecos, and some types of bichirs. It is important to avoid small fish that might be seen as prey.

Aggression: Tong Yang Arowanas can exhibit territorial behavior, especially towards fish of similar shape or size. To minimize aggression, provide ample space and hiding spots within the aquarium. A well-structured environment helps to reduce stress and aggressive encounters among tank inhabitants.

Experience Level: Due to their specific care requirements and size, Tong Yang Arowanas are best suited for experienced aquarists. Successful keeping of this species demands a commitment to maintaining high water quality, a suitable diet, and a spacious aquarium.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 75°F to 86°F (24°C to 30°C)
  • pH: 6.5 to 7.5
  • Hardness: 5 to 15 dGH

A stable and clean environment is key to the health of the Tong Yang Arowana. Regular water changes, efficient filtration, and monitoring of water parameters are essential practices to ensure the well-being of this magnificent species.

Conclusion: The Tong Yang Arowana is not just a fish; it’s a living piece of art that requires dedication and care. For the right aquarist, it offers an unparalleled opportunity to keep a piece of aquatic history that brings both beauty and intrigue to the home aquarium.
