Description

Barramundi Silver Grouper Lates Calcarifer 10cm

Overview: The Barramundi Silver Grouper, scientifically known as Lates calcarifer, is a magnificent and versatile fish species admired by aquarists worldwide. Renowned for its striking appearance and robust size, the Barramundi is a unique addition to any sizable freshwater or brackish aquarium setup. This species combines beauty with resilience, making it a sought-after choice for dedicated fish enthusiasts.

Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, Barramundi Silver Groupers thrive in a variety of water conditions ranging from freshwater rivers to coastal estuaries. Their adaptability to different environments is part of what makes them so fascinating. They are found in countries spanning Australia, Southeast Asia, and parts of the Middle East.

Feeding: Barramundi are carnivorous predators with a diet primarily consisting of smaller fish, crustaceans, and mollusks. In captivity, they require a varied diet that can include live or frozen foods such as shrimp, squid, and specially formulated carnivore pellets to ensure they receive all necessary nutrients for optimal health.

Tank Mates: Due to their size and predatory nature, choosing tank mates for the Barramundi Silver Grouper requires careful consideration. Suitable companions include other large, robust fish species that can hold their own without becoming prey. It is crucial to avoid small or overly aggressive fish that might provoke or be eaten by the Barramundi.

Aggression: While not overly aggressive towards similarly sized fish, Barramundi Silver Groupers will exhibit natural predatory behavior towards smaller species. Their temperament is generally peaceful with appropriate tank mates, making them a manageable species for experienced aquarists.

Experience Level: Caring for Barramundi Silver Groupers is recommended for intermediate to advanced aquarists. Their large size, dietary requirements, and need for spacious aquariums with specific water conditions make them more suited for those with experience in maintaining larger fish species.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 76°F to 86°F (24°C to 30°C)
  • pH: 7.0 to 8.0
  • Salinity: Can vary from freshwater to slightly brackish conditions; specific gravity of 1.005 to 1.010 for brackish setups
  • Aquarium Size: Minimum of 250 gallons for a single specimen, with ample swimming space and hiding spots.

The Barramundi Silver Grouper (Lates calcarifer) is undoubtedly a prestigious addition to any large aquarium, offering a unique blend of beauty, size, and challenge. Its care requires a commitment to maintaining the right environmental conditions and a diet that mimics its natural predatory lifestyle. With proper care, the Barramundi can be a rewarding species for the dedicated aquarist looking to add an impressive centerpiece to their aquatic collection.
