Description

Geophagus Surinamensis 4cm

Overview: The Geophagus Surinamensis, often referred to as the Surinam Geophagus or Redstriped Eartheater, is a captivating addition to any freshwater aquarium. Recognized for their unique behavior of sifting through the substrate to find food, these fish are a spectacle of natural behavior and beauty. With their elongated bodies and vibrant red stripes, they can grow up to 12 inches in captivity, requiring spacious tanks to accommodate their size and active nature.

Origin: Native to the rivers and tributaries of South America, particularly in Suriname, the Geophagus Surinamensis thrives in environments that mimic their natural habitats. They are found in slow to moderate flowing waters, where the riverbeds are rich in sandy substrates.

Feeding: These omnivores have a diverse diet in the wild, consuming a mixture of invertebrates, small crustaceans, and plant matter. In captivity, they should be fed a variety of foods, including quality cichlid pellets, frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and occasionally, vegetable matter to ensure a balanced diet.

Tank Mates: Geophagus Surinamensis are generally peaceful with other species but can exhibit territorial behaviors towards their own kind or similar-looking bottom dwellers. Suitable tank mates include larger tetras, peaceful South American cichlids, and robust catfish species. Avoid small, aggressive, or overly timid fish that could be outcompeted for food or stressed by their presence.

Aggression: While not inherently aggressive, the Geophagus Surinamensis can display territorial disputes, especially during breeding. Providing ample space, hiding spots, and a properly structured environment can minimize aggression. It’s advised to keep them in groups or with other peaceful species to promote a harmonious tank.

Experience Level: Due to their specific care requirements and sizable tank needs, the Geophagus Surinamensis is best suited for intermediate to advanced aquarists. Their upkeep demands an understanding of water chemistry, dietary needs, and tank dynamics.

Water Parameters: Ideal water conditions include a temperature range of 75-82°F (24-28°C), pH levels between 6.0 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Regular water changes and monitoring are crucial to maintain these parameters and ensure the health of these fascinating eartheaters.

In conclusion, the Geophagus Surinamensis offers a unique blend of beauty, intriguing behavior, and a touch of challenge to the dedicated aquarist. With proper care, they can be the centerpiece of a thriving freshwater community aquarium.
