Description

Barred Armoured Delhezi Bichir Polypterus Delhezi 10cm

Overview:
The Barred Armoured Delhezi Bichir is a captivating and prehistoric-looking freshwater fish known for its elongated body, armored scales, and unique ability to breathe air due to a lung-like swim bladder. This species reaches up to 14 inches in captivity and exhibits a striking pattern of vertical bars along its body, making it a standout addition to any large aquarium setup.

Origin:
Native to the Congo River Basin in Central Africa, the Delhezi Bichir thrives in a variety of water conditions, from slow-moving streams to larger river systems. They are adept at adapting to various environments, making them a resilient species in captivity.

Feeding:
Carnivorous by nature, the Delhezi Bichir requires a diet rich in protein. Offer a variety of foods, including live or frozen prey like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and earthworms, as well as high-quality carnivore pellets. Occasional feedings of fresh fish or shrimp can also promote optimal health and coloration.

Tank Mates:
Suitable for community tanks with other large and semi-aggressive species, Delhezi Bichirs do well with similarly sized fish that are not small enough to be considered prey. Good tank mates include larger tetras, cichlids, and catfish. Avoid keeping them with very small fish, as they may become inadvertent snacks.

Aggression:
Generally peaceful with similarly sized fish, Delhezi Bichirs can exhibit predatory behavior towards much smaller species. Establishing a spacious and well-structured aquarium with hiding places can help minimize stress and aggression.

Experience Level:
Intermediate. While not overly demanding, Delhezi Bichirs require a dedicated aquarium with specific water conditions and a diet that meets their carnivorous needs. Knowledge of their behavior and environmental requirements is essential for their well-being.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 76-82°F (24-28°C)
  • pH: 6.5-7.5
  • Hardness: 5-19 dGH
  • Aquarium size: Minimum 75 gallons for a single individual, with additional space for tank mates and to accommodate their active swimming behavior.

Offering fascinating behavior and a distinctive appearance, the Barred Armoured Delhezi Bichir is a prized specimen for the dedicated aquarist looking to add a touch of prehistoric charm to their aquatic ensemble.
