Description

Swan Mussel (Anodonta cygnea)

Overview

The Swan Mussel is a large, peaceful freshwater bivalve valued for its natural filtering ability and unique, shell-based appearance. Calm and undemanding, it helps maintain water clarity by consuming suspended particles, making it a useful addition to coldwater ponds and spacious aquariums.

Origin

Native to Europe and parts of Western Asia, commonly found in lakes, ponds, and slow-moving rivers with soft, muddy substrates.

Feeding

A filter feeder that consumes microscopic particles, algae, phytoplankton, and organic debris from the water column. Requires a well-established system with a natural supply of suspended food; supplemental phytoplankton may be necessary in very clean tanks.

Tank Mates

Peaceful and safe with all non-predatory species. Best suited to ponds or large aquariums with gentle fish such as goldfish, minnows, loaches, and peaceful coldwater species. Avoid crayfish or large fish that may disturb or damage the mussel.

Aggression

Completely peaceful. Does not interact aggressively with any tank mates.

Experience Level

Recommended for intermediate keepers. Requires stable, well-oxygenated water and a mature environment rich in natural microfoods. Not suitable for small or newly established aquariums.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 50°F – 72°F (10°C – 22°C)

  • pH: 6.8 – 8.0

  • Hardness: 6 – 18 dGH

  • Substrate: Prefers soft sand or mud to burrow into

Natural, effective, and fascinating, the Swan Mussel is an excellent addition to ponds and large coldwater setups seeking improved water clarity and unique biodiversity.
