Yellowhead Butterflyfish Chaetodon Xanthocephalus

Overview: The Yellowhead Butterflyfish, with its striking coloration and elegant form, is a captivating addition to any marine aquarium. Characterized by a vivid yellow head, contrasting beautifully against its white body adorned with thin, vertical black stripes, this species stands out in any marine setup. Their peaceful demeanor and graceful swimming patterns make them a favored choice among aquarists.

Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, the Yellowhead Butterflyfish thrives in the coral-rich areas of the ocean. They are commonly found swimming in pairs or small groups around reefs, where they navigate through corals and rocks, making them a species accustomed to complex environments.

Feeding: In the wild, their diet primarily consists of coral polyps, invertebrates, and algae. In captivity, they require a varied diet to maintain their health and color vibrancy. It is recommended to feed them a mix of marine flakes, frozen foods like mysis shrimp and brine shrimp, and vegetable-based foods. Consistent feeding of small amounts two to three times a day is advised.

Tank Mates: Yellowhead Butterflyfish are generally peaceful and can coexist with a variety of other marine species. Ideal tank mates include other non-aggressive fish such as clownfish, damsels, and gobies. Avoid housing them with larger, aggressive species or those that tend to nip at fins.

Aggression: This species exhibits low aggression and is considered to be a peaceful community fish. However, they may show territorial behavior towards other butterflyfish, especially in smaller aquariums. A larger tank with ample hiding spots and room to swim can minimize potential conflicts.

Experience Level: Due to their specific dietary and environmental needs, Yellowhead Butterflyfish are best suited for intermediate to advanced aquarists. Knowledge and commitment to replicate their natural habitat and diet are crucial for their well-being in captivity.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 72°F to 78°F (22°C to 26°C)
  • pH: 8.1 to 8.4
  • Salinity: 1.020 to 1.025 specific gravity
  • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm; Nitrate: <20 ppm

Proper water quality, regular maintenance, and a stable environment are essential to keep the Yellowhead Butterflyfish healthy and thriving. Their stunning appearance and serene nature make them a prized possession for any marine enthusiast willing to meet their care requirements.
