Description

Green Zaire West African Bichir Polypterus Retropinnis 10cm

Overview: The Green Zaire West African Bichir, scientifically known as Polypterus Retropinnis, is a captivating freshwater fish, celebrated for its prehistoric appearance and unique locomotion. With its elongated body, armored scales, and distinctive dorsal finlets that resemble a dragon’s back, this species adds a touch of ancient mystery to any aquarium. This bichir species is relatively rare, making it a prized addition for the enthusiastic aquarist.

Origin: Native to the river systems of Central and West Africa, particularly in the Congo Basin, the Green Zaire Bichir thrives in a variety of freshwater habitats. These environments range from slow-moving rivers and swamps to floodplains, where they utilize their lung-like swim bladder to breathe air in low-oxygen waters.

Feeding: Polypterus Retropinnis is carnivorous, requiring a diet rich in meaty foods to thrive. Suitable dietary options include live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and small fish. It is vital to ensure a varied diet to promote optimal health and growth.

Tank Mates: When selecting tank mates for the Green Zaire Bichir, consider similarly sized, peaceful to semi-aggressive fish that dwell in the middle to upper levels of the aquarium. Avoid small fish that may be mistaken for prey. Compatible tank mates include larger tetras, cichlids, and catfish, which can coexist harmoniously with this bichir.

Aggression: The Green Zaire Bichir exhibits a relatively peaceful demeanor towards fish of similar size but can exhibit predatory behavior towards smaller species. It is crucial to monitor interactions and adjust the community composition as necessary to prevent predation.

Experience Level: Due to its specific care requirements and dietary needs, Polypterus Retropinnis is recommended for intermediate to advanced aquarists. Knowledge of the species’ natural habitat and behavior is beneficial for creating a suitable and enriching environment.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 76-82°F (24-28°C)
  • pH: 6.5-7.5
  • Hardness: 5-15 dGH

A well-oxygenated tank with ample hiding spots and a soft, sandy substrate mimics the bichir’s natural environment, promoting health and well-being. Regular water changes and filtration are crucial to maintain water quality and accommodate this species’ sensitivity to poor water conditions.

In conclusion, the Green Zaire West African Bichir offers a unique and ancient allure to the home aquarium. With proper care, appropriate feeding, and a well-considered community of tank mates, Polypterus Retropinnis can be a fascinating and rewarding inhabitant for the dedicated aquarist.
